He walked up to me as soon as I entered his stall and let me attach the lead. We wormed him with little problem. Left. Later I went back in the stall and he came up again. Led him out of the stall and to the arena. Made him “lounge” around me to the right and left. Needs more work on the left. Let him loose to play.
He was apprehensive today. Things that were different today were that I picked his stall first. I wore a different coat, too. Finally let me catch him( all is forgiven. Yes, scratch my cheek, please. ) led easily with less attempts to nip. Again I flex tied him and brushed him. He was more relaxed when I brushed his rump today. Put him out with Pecos.
He was Gelded yesterday so I expected him to be Sore or groggy but he was not. His feet were trimmed also. He came up to me almost immediately and I hooked his lead on to his halter and led him out. After walking him around the yard for several minutes, I “flex tied” him to the post and groomed him. He is still touchiest below his knees but didn’t really pull back on the lead. Still trying to nip often. Released him into the paddock.
He immediately came up to me when I entered the stall. I rubbed him and brushed him with the lead rope on. The whole time he tried to nip me and reared up several times all in an attempt to entice me to play. I gave him a Jollyball to play with which he nibbles on and licked on immediately. Stephanie and I led him behind Pecos to the front paddock. They played together for at least an hour. Several times Biscuit ran laps around Pecos and the paddock.
He was reserved at first but more quickly warmed up to me. Threatened to kick me but when I chided him he did not repeat it. “Just testing.” Allowed me to put the lead rope on and seemed to enjoy being brushing with either the soft bristle and curry. Constant attempts to nip. I gave him the rope to chew on instead. Got him to lead around the stall in both directions or a few minutes by turning him left and right with light pressure.
Continued to work on letting me get closer. He let me get as close as I wasTues but no closer. Sniffed my hand three times and nibbled. Worked on positioning to face front and give me his left side which he had not done before. Broke session into three parts. 1.Standing but not getting close. 2.Cleaning stall around him. 3.Approach/positing to give him a breather between my stressor actions He threatened to kick more often today.
Desensitized , worked on getting to face me, encouraged him to “hook up”
Encouraged him to face me instead of butt to me. Allowed only turns in to me instead of butt to me. He sniffed my outstretched hand several times and did exploration mouthing. I did not push to touch him but he allowed me to come within an inch of his whole right side head to tail. A big step for him. Last time I couldn’t get within two feet of him.
