Special Needs
Dolche is partially sighted in her right eye. She is prone to eye infections. Dolche came to us feral and is still very spooky, fearful, and hard to catch. Dolche has had an infection in her intestine for over 4 years. 3 years ago, she had surgery to cut it out. In 11/2020, her intestine ruptured through her stomach and she went in for emergency surgery. She was hospitalized for 11 days, and the doctor removed a 27 inch section of her intestine and a large mass tumor from her stomach wall. She is fully recovered from that, but continues to have scar tissue under her abdomen along her midline. It does not impair her movement or hurt her at all.

Farrier Trim

was somewhat easy to catch and hold for the foster caregiver - stood patiently for the farrier to trim all 4 feet - Had a bad case of laminitis last week and was sore, so the trim was minimal and will continue on medication therapy and ice hooves as needed

CATCHING IN A HERD

Skill Level: Green

During Training Session #1, we worked with Dolche on CATCHING IN A HERD, with volunteer handler, Kahne Krause. When handler entered the pen, she spent a fair amount of time walking around, looking down, deciding whether to catch Bullseye or Dolche. Dolche turned and walked to the back of the pen against the block wall with Bullseye behind her in between the wall and the feeder trough on the ground. The handler approached Dolche facing the wall in the corner, and positioned her body between the feeder trough and the pony, and proceeded with the haltering process with the pony\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s nose to the wall. Although this was a controlled and calm interaction, we had some discussion on safety in the environment and moving the feeder trough away so neither pony, nor handler, would trip on it. Also, after completing the haltering process, we had discussion about making the halter tighter with the knot higher on the ponies chin. Then the handler completed the unhaltering process and released the pony back into the herd.

CATCHING IN A HERD

Skill Level: Green

During our Training Session #1, we worked with Dolche on Catching in a Herd. We worked on separating her from the more dominant ponies, gating off one pony, and catching her in a pen in a herd with one other buddy pony, Bullseye. We used approach and retreat (drive and draw), and faced her perpendicular to the back block wall. When she stepped backward, the handler, April Beighley, also stepped backward. When she turned to leave, the handler used slow steady pressure with the leadline tapping her side to intentionally cause her to leave and walk away from the other pony. She approached and negotiated space around a feed trough in the pen. Then she put the rope over Dolche\\\\\\\\\'s neck, and completed the haltering process with the rope halter with no issues.

Assign a Horse to Catch in A Herd: Challenge complete!

Skill Level: Yellow

Catching Dolche in a herd can be tricky. She is very shy and buddy dependent on Bullseye - she will bolt away out of fear of being caught - you need to separate her from Bullseye and approach slowly from her good eye side (left) and let her know she is going to be caught - have to use a lot of drive and draw to catch Dolche

Icing hooves for laminitis onset

Catching, leading backwards to rail in the pen, standing perpendicular to the pen with tail facing pen and head facing out - stand still and tolerate front hooves placed in bowl of ice water 15 minutes each 3 to 4 times per day - to decrease swelling in laminae and inflammation of hoof walls and slow the progress of bone rotation - Dolche was very resistant the first time, and pawed and kicked the water bowl over to remove her hooves, but after the 3rd time, she got used to it and stood still for hoof icing treatment - by day 2, 6th treatment, she stands still for this procedure

Emergency Veterinary Care for Acute Onset Laminitis

Dolche was lying down for an extended time and not eating. I examined her stomach by listening through a stethoscope to check for colic. She was shaking in the front legs and refusing to stand up so I checked her pulse and it felt slightly elevated. The right front pastern felt warmer than usual so I suspected laminitis flare up - contacted Vet. Emergency Vet came - she was very jumpy with the intermuscular needle, so the Vet needed to use a stud chain across upper lip to prevent her from rearing back - held her steady and gave injection into the muscle and then ace intravenous injection - she was calmer with the 3rd injection - I suspect she was more nervous and upset due to severe pain in the front hooves - Vet diagnosed laminitis and suggested a treatment to follow.

grooming and ground work

worked on catching Dolche in a herd with one pony and one mini in the pen - separated her from the other pony and gated off the mini - approached her slowly and she bolted and ran - once the other pony, Bullseye was caught, then Dolche stood still and allowed herself to be caught - haltered Dolche and led her to the barn window - tied perpendicular to the barn bars on the window - she stood patiently tied for body brushing, hair brush and trim mane, tail, and forelock with scissors, and hoof picking - enjoyed massage and wiping face clean - pulled away when wiped eye with wet washcloth and applied eye med - after grooming session done, practiced walking in figure eight in pen, stopping, backing up on leadline with flat band halter - she kept the pace with the handlers (both child and adult) - overall, this session was very productive and positive - Dolche demonstrated right brained introvert horsenality - when turned out, she stood still and continued to stand close to the handler, showing interest and trust

worked on equine body language, safety tips, catching, tools, preparation for tying

skittish but open to touch and tolerated flag & stick, sweet, developed trust with handler when handler moved slowly and quietly and used body language to remain calm, walked through the obstacle of 2 barrels sideways for squeeze, handler sent her through to the left using pressure from one tap with the carrot stick & savvy string, she walked through it calmly, with the other horse caught and her separated in the back pen, she followed Bullseye and was easy to catch, turned out individually in pen - horse stepped to the side and then she stood there with the handler when halter removed

worked on equine body language & use of tools for leading

following the feel of the leadrope & pressure to move through and over obstacle - horse was hesitant to go in the obstacle, but volunteer added steady pressure from hind quarters with carrot stick & string to encourage forward movement to complete this challenging task
