Summary of Training for th Sept. Oct 60 Day Training Challenge

When Firenze and I started working together I found him to be pleasant to work with until he was challenged to work beyond what the duration he felt was necessary. That was a short interval. His goto response was get mouthy and nippy. So one challenge from the beginning was to increase his tolerance. That seemed to work its way out as the number of session we had together increased. He has not lost his habit of nipping entirely, but it takes a lot more to get him to resort to it. Once we developed a relationship I found him to be curious, a pretty quick study, and enjoying the work. He was clumsy learning to turn on the hindquarters, banging his front longs together trying to turn to right, but was otherwise quick to respond to leading and backing and disengaging the hind quarters. He started out as highly reactive to flag and ended up being nonchalant about its presence. He showed little resistance in our work on sending in either direction over tarps, between barrels or over barrels. Although walking through a kiddie pool wasn\\\'t his thing. Trailer loading was his biggest challenge having had a very bad experience when he was rescued, but instruction I got from from our head trainer Sara at the start of our trailer training week he responded beautifully and now calmly self loads on step-up and side by side trailers. He\\\'s good with his feet. That was not much of challenge and ready for most of what the vet with throw at him. He needs a little more work on needles and and trimming around his ears. But he is definitely ready for his forever home. All he needs is someone to step. I\\\'m surprise that non one has. He\\\'s a handsome guy and I think he knows it.

Trailer Loading

He has had several incidents with the trailer that have not been positive and he really needs to get surgery to remove this bone spur so he needs to be able to be trailered. I\\\'ve done several roundpen sessions and my goal was to back the trailer up to the roundpen but it has been super muddy. He has done well in the roundpen: w/t, inside turns, stop and face me. We have also done a lot of head down as he has an extreme swayback and as an Arab, he tends to run around with his head way up in the air. We\\\'ve also lunged in the roundpen and the ring. The first time we worked in the ring, he was dragging me all over the place but we worked through it and he would w/t politely around. Also have worked on moving the forequarters and hindquarters around as well as backing. During backing when I\\\'m on his right side, he has tried nipping at me and posturing a bit (thinking about striking) but I just kept pushing him to back until he softened and the behavior went away. The trailer: the first 2 days, I just literally worked on having him chill by the trailer as he displayed a lot of anxiety just being by it. I got him to stand outside of the trailer with his head down and touching the trailer with his front legs. Then day 3 I pushed him a bit more to load, which he did fairly quickly but it is the moving around in the trailer and the leaving the trailer that need help. He panics when he is in the trailer and then he flies off the trailer. He has fallen down in the trailer since he is so panicky. I kept sending him on and off until the departure was a little less chaotic. This was self loading in the big stock trailer.
