Round Pen/Trailer Loading

Horse Image

We worked round pen today. When using the longe line I did not use the stick, I kept it on the ground. When I have the stick in hand, even if it\\\'s pointed on the ground that is extra energy for Gypsy. With it on the ground today I was better able to control her rhythm. I also changed my voice to stay calm and quiet, especially when I told her to walk. This worked wonders. We walked most of the time and she\\\'d want to speed up. Most of the time she would go back to a walk when I talked quietly or just a little prompting with the longe line. I worked with her on loading here into trailer. In the past her trailer loading has not gone well. She would panic in the trailer. She would get in the trailer and squish the handler and try to turn around to get out. Today we worked on putting her front 2 feet in the trailer and standing there for a few seconds then backing her out. We got to where her back legs were at the edge of the trailer.

Round Pen/Walking/Ferrier

Horse Image

Walked around the ranch and spent time in the round pen. When she was on the lunge line, I worked mostly on walking. She likes to walk for a short time then start trotting on her own. Saying the words \\\"good girl\\\" seemed to be a trigger for her to go from a walk to a trot. If I said \\\"good Gypsy\\\" she didn\\\'t increase her speed. Ferrier was in and we decided to see how well she handled having someone come around and pick her feet up. I kept her on the lead and talked/petted her while the ferrier picked up her feet. She fought a little, but not bad. He was able to pick up all of her feet and clean them. She didn\\\'t need to be trimmed.

Grooming and Round Pen

Horse Image

Worked with Gypsy to get her used to standing and being groomed. She is not good at standing still. Took her to the round pen and let her free lunge. She has lots of energy to free lunging to begin helps her to get her energy out. I use a stick, hand directions and voice commands to drive her in the the desired direction, and kept her moving at a fast pace. After she got some free lunging done, I hooked her up a lunge line. We worked mostly on walking.

Round Pen/Walking

Horse Image

Worked with her on changing directions. I would constantly change from left to right. Gypsy has no clue to personal space and will walk directly into you because she is looking at all of other activity going on and not what you are doing. I will continually stop her, especially when she is looking away from me and not paying attention.

Groom

Horse Image

I did not halter her, she came up to me and I was able to touch and brush her all over. Touched her legs, body, ears, face, belly, back and hooves. I thing this was a big step for her as far as I know she has never been groomed, could be mistaken but I feel like this was great progress

halter, walk to round pen

Horse Image

Haltered her, took her to round pen and took lead rope off and let her be free in the pen. Rubbed her with my hands on her face neck and upper back, also with the carrot stick. She knows whoa and will back up. She will follow me around the round pen and will come to me so I can put lead rope on her.

Halter training

Horse Image

Getting to know each other...it took about 30 minutes of getting acquainted and she had no problems letting me halter her. We walked around the pen for 20 minutes or so. She will hang right at your shoulders on the lead.

Farrier

Horse Image

Gypsy received 8-10 week reoccurring Farrier care. To help with trimming we did a light sublingual sedation with Dormosedan. May or may not need to be used on next trimming depending on if she has a team working with her.
