Rock Saddle Back and Forth - From Mounting Block: Challenge complete!

Mark this challenge complete when you log an activity for a horse that is able to find a comfortable and balanced place to stand after you rock the saddle back and forth from the mounting block, as if to throw him off balance, but the horse actually becomes more stable.

Horse Image

08/25/2016 06:09

Pat Saddle from Mounting Block: Challenge complete!

Mark this challenge complete when you log an activity for standing on the mounting block and leading the horse up to you (without moving your feet) and being able to pat the saddle in preparation for mounting. This only counts if the horse is straight and not too far from the block, or pushing into your personal space.

Horse Image

Back Horse Away from Mounting Block: Challenge complete!

Mark this challenge complete when you log an activity when you are able to move the horse back and away from the mounting block, all without moving your feet. This helps keep the horse in the frame of mind to be willingly guided, not just assume that mounting block come up to the block and tune out anything else. This also helps prepare you and the horse for a moment when the horse may push into the mounting block as if running you over with his presence.

Rub Horse on Shoulder from Mounting Block: Challenge complete!

Mark this challenge complete when you log an activity for standing on the mounting block and leading the horse up to you (without moving your feet) to rub the horse on the shoulder.

Add Another Horse to This Purpose: Challenge complete!

Once you have been able to complete all of these challenges with a horse, add a new horse to this purpose. This will allow you to earn points as you complete the challenges for each additional horse.

Mounting from the mounting Block

Continued with helping Joe come up to the mounting block. I was able to complete all challenges at this time. On one mounting, the mounting block shifted and he spooked somewhat away from the block. Continued the process until he no longer was nervous coming up to the block.

Mounting using the mounting block

While on the mounting block I was able to send Joe around 90 degrees and he was able to bring his withers to the mounting block. While there I shook his saddle, stirrups on both sides and he didn\\\'t se very bothered. Did this several times and finally I was able to sit on him and he was quiet. Dismounted and sat on him several times.

Mounting from the Ground

Joe was mounted with little issue. Also used a snaffle bit, which he didn\\\'t seem to like much. Was led around the round pen.

Mounting from the Ground.

Continued with work mounting from the ground. We stood on the stirrup on both side several times. Was a bit nervous but did not pull away as he did last session. We used a snaffle and a bit larger saddle. He was a bit uncomfortable with the snaffle and played with it most of the session. Finally felt comfortable placing all weight in the saddle and trainer sat in the saddle for the first time and walked around the round pen. Did this twice. Was quiet but was bit nervous. Did not move forward with leg squeeze.

Mounting from the Ground

Saddled Joe and worked with his balance and moving of the stirrup. Did well on both sides with little worry. When mounting, Joe was quiet on the right side but a bit worried on the left. May have had a bad experience with his previous owner and training from that side. Did this numerous times and was finally quiet after we flexed and moved him in a circle.

HQ, FQ, Leading, Backing

Continue to work with Joe on all his basics and he easily moves through all these with ease.

Horse Image

07/25/2016 07:12

Two line driving

Used two lines to drive Joe, who did pretty well in following direction of pressure. Joe is easily distracted with anything to eat on the ground. Was able to move in both directions with very little pressure from the rear (flag). Almost no reaction to the flag anymore.

Catching and Fly mask, swat

Spent time moving toward and away from Joe to continue to gain his confidence and not think I catch him only to work. Fly mask was washed and put on him.

Horse Image

07/20/2016 07:04

One line driving

Joe was put through paces of backing, leading and HQ and FQ. Worked on one line driving both directions. A bit slow on right side.

Leading, backing, HQ, FQ, One line driving

Put Joe through all his paces with trotting both directions, walking on lead line and backing. Getting better on changing directions as I request. One line driving is doing well.

Catching

Put suggestions from DeeDee and Trevor to work and removed the pony from the pen, put up another panel to limit Joe\\\'s travel and what a change. Worked on his one eye contact than two and moved his hind end around. Did this a couple of times and we are back on the schedule of training. Allowed me to put on fly spray and groom.

Catching

Continued to have issues with catching Joe. Sought suggestions from Forever Foundation members. Not sure what factors changed.

Horse Image

07/05/2016 10:14

Catching

Joe has not allowed me to catch him now for a couple days. I finally did but after working with him for about 30 minutes. Not sure what is going on. Did some hq and fq work as well as following.

Applied Fly repellant

Fly mask wash washed and swap was applied to Joe with minimal reaction. Joe is good with applying swap on his face, around eyes, nose and ears.

Fly mask

Joe had had a fly msk on in the past but still hs some reservation about it. After catching him which no effort, he allowed me to slowly put on the mask and wore it the entie day.

Two line driving

Began to day with all basic skills then one line driving from both sides. Joe did well in the large round pen. Attached a second line to his halter below the rosebuds. He did well traveling to the left, driven by the right driving line but driving right was more of a challenge. He continued to turn and face me. Returned to driving right with one line to help him in this direction.

Fly Spray, Fly mask

Joe was easy to catch today and to fly spray. Trembled a bit at first but then stood still while he was sprayed above below and face. Good boy! Later after training, Joe stood still while a mask was placed on him.

one line driving

Worked with Joe and practiced his hq and fq turns. Continued with one line driving.Doing well. Did not use flag to drive forward but will before moving on.May be ready to continue with two lines. Seems to be less concerned with sudden movements.

Continue with desensitizing

Continued with more flag in an attempt to lesson his spookiness to people. Accepted the flag with very little reaction. Need to look for addition tools or methods to help with this issue.

one line driving

Joe seems to take the one line driving well. Not nervous with having some slightly behind his hip. Will continue to work with direction to complete challenges.

Up to the fence. Saddling, farrier prep

Joe has been coming up to me while standing on mounting block, however when using the fence I am having difficulty in moving his hindquarter closer and placing his right rear hoof near the fence. It may be because his is really short and he cannot look over the fence. May go back to using the mounting block and try to get him to line up. He is very good at standing still while being saddled, and is picking up his feet well.

Horse Image

06/04/2016 12:00

Saddling

Joe is easily saddled and unsaddled. He stands still, and is comfortable with the saddle when going through his transitions. He tends to be a bit lazy and reluctant to lope.

Horse Image

Saddle

Joe is able to wear a bareback pad and saddle comfortably during his lessons , backing , hq, and fq.
