Carrying Drill

We worked on desensitizing Lincoln with a training flag while moving under saddle. We moved the flag around his withers, on the saddle, down his back legs, and around his neck and head. We also flashed the flag over his back and neck, so he could see it in the opposite eye. We also had him hold the flag on his saddle and withers. We rolled his hindquarters after he calmed down with each activity. Overall, Lincoln did well. He was initially startled, but had no significant reaction, and was relatively quick to calm down. His hindquarter roll his still a little tight and rushed. Secondly, we worked on Lincoln pulling a log from his saddle horn, with the log both far away and close up. He did great with pulling the log far away on both sides. Closer up, he became concerned when the log touched his foot, but was quick to recover. We then worked on inside turns and switching the log to the other side of his back. He startled at the rope moving over his hind end and was resistant to doing an inside turn. After doing this a few times, he did an inside turn with no reaction and we ended there.
