05/15/2019 01:38 Reviewed new skills, brief round pen, trailer |
Reviewed new skills, touched on the round pen (loping), walked, practiced obstacles and leaping into the trailer. Walked back to paddock with a bareback rider. |
05/13/2019 01:35 Walk, Groom, Learn new things |
Misty is ready for the show. We did a quick review of lunging in the arena with no warm-up. She gave me what I wanted so we learned new skills such as the 280 turn, flipping the lead around head, walking with a bareback rider. |
05/11/2019 01:32 Grooming, Walking, quick review of skills |
We walked, groomed and touched on all of the different skills for the show at random. SUCCESS! She was interviewed by a couple for a potential adoption. Rumor has it she made it onto their list. |
05/10/2019 01:29 Obstacle, short lunge session in the arena |
After warm-up, grooming, went to arena, kept the lunge session short, but successful, reviewed the obstacle course |
05/08/2019 01:26 Heavy duty round pen work |
After warm-up and stretching, we worked on the lunge line with rapid changes to keep her engaged. I tried to keep the lunge line portion fairly short in the interest of interest and success. |
05/06/2019 01:04 Bathe |
Misty got a bath and did not care for it, but she endured. We finished grooming and took a walk to dry off. |
05/04/2019 01:01 Field Trip |
Field trip to Cyclone Center, warmed-up in on walk, implemented stretches, free lunged in round pen for a minute. Trailered to arena. refused loping on the lunge line, practiced other skills, got on her bareback and was led around the arena. She did not mind at all. Whoas very well from the mount. |
05/03/2019 12:55 Heavy duty round pen work |
After warming up, we free lunged changing directions and gaits often to keep it interesting and to build endurance. Next added the lunge-line, she still resists, but mostly because she doesn\\\'t like it. Her stretches have helped her immensely. We took her heart rate up and kept her moving. We walked it out, practiced 360 turns, backing, jogging in a circle with the handler. Groomed and returned to paddock. |
05/01/2019 12:53 Walk-n-Whoa Wednesday |
worked on 360 turns, jogging in a circle to the right, trailer loading, stretches |
04/29/2019 03:51 360 Turn |
After warming up, we have been working on the 360 turn to the right inside of the box. |
04/26/2019 12:44 stretches and round pen |
Implemented stretches from the chiropractor and worked in the round pen |
04/22/2019 04:11 Warm-up in round pen Reviewed obstacle course |
Misty has been doing well. We had a light day. We warmed up in the big round pen, went through our stretches, and free lunged. On voice, I was able to get her to stop and switch directions, as well as change gaits. Next we reviewed the obstacle course. |
04/20/2019 08:00 Field Trip to Edgewood arena |
We warmed up at the ranch. Loaded and traveled to the arena, traveled well, took a walk on the trail, went to the arena. Asked Misty to work on lunge line in both directions, practiced jogging in a large circle, backing, 360. We even tried a little loping. We got a few strides, but did not drag me around. She responded well to a crowded arena. Ended with a nice walk on the trails with Ellie. Loaded and traveled well back to the ranch. |
04/19/2019 01:32 Trailer Loading, Obstacle Practice, Round Pen |
Warmed up with walk-n-whoa, free lunged in round pen, tried out the 15 ft lunge line then tried it out in the arena. Progress made, no dragging me around when she attempted a lope after stretching. She got tired and did not want to lope on right so we finished in round pen and ended on a good note. We worked on more stretching and ended with grooming. |
04/17/2019 03:28 360 turns |
Raining, we managed to work on 360 turns in both directions, taking one step at a time and crossing over. |
04/15/2019 01:23 Assess Misty\'s gimp |
Ashley worked with me today to assess Misty\\\'s gimp. We worked in arena and round pen using different lengths lunge line. |
04/12/2019 03:09 Round Pen |
Started timing time in each gate and each direction while lunging. Misty is very responsive to the transitions. She has little endurance. |
04/10/2019 03:56 Wednesday Walk-n-Whoa |
Revisiting the basics on a walk.random whoas, ground tie, clean feet, back walk-n-trot. Visit the round pen for a quick free lunge. More walking adventure. |
04/08/2019 03:19 Put a saddle on for our session |
Today we groomed, put a saddle on, and worked in the round pen. Next was the obstacle course. We used various lengths lunge line and she did GREAT! After practicing the obstacle course I set up a new obstacle. She tolerated it and did well. It will be something to build on. She also took a couple of side pass steps today! |
04/06/2019 01:14 Lunge, obstacles, trailer |
We warmed up with a walk-n-whoa. practiced with the various lengths of lunge line in the round pen and used the timer. Misty was relaxed throughout the session. Next we easily loaded in the trailer and she took the first step; then looked at me as if to say, \\\"Come on.\\\" Next was obstacles. She did awesome! |
04/04/2019 04:07 Lunging |
We went for a walk, warmed up in the round pen and free lunged. I decided to time each request so that I could build up her endurance. Next was the 25 ft lunge line and then the 20. It was determined that Misty has a very difficult time lunging with anything less than 20 ft. In fact, I could tell it was a struggle and uncomfortable for her, but she hung in there and did really well. |
04/03/2019 01:04 Back to Basics |
We went on a Wednesday Walk-n-Whoa. We enjoyed each others company, groomed, explored new territory, trailered, and practiced all of our skills on the walk. |
04/01/2019 12:59 Tried something new |
We tried to learn how to pivot on the hind feet. It was very difficult for both of us. It ended up being a frustrating session. |
03/27/2019 03:30 Wednesday Walk-n-Whoa with Obstacle Course |
We took a different route today for our walk. It was exciting, as for most of the walk, Misty walked along beside me \\\'hands free\\\' and it seemed much easier for both of us to jog along. Misty, of course, gets a little distracted by wanting to say hello to all of her friends. Once we made out way around to the obstacle course, we noticed 3 logs were set-up consecutively. Hands-free, I clicked then Misty and I \\\'ran\\\' together and jumped over them. We managed to review all other obstacles and practiced all of our drills at random. After grooming, she returned to her paddock. Together, we had a delightful day. |
03/25/2019 03:30 Round pen |
I can hardly contain myself! Use of the new extra long lunge line made a big difference in the round pen yesterday with Misty. First, after picking her up from her paddock I placed the lead rope on top of her neck and we walked all the way to the round pen hands free. Next, I free lunged her at the walk and trot to help her get warmed up and get her heart rate up a bit. She did everything I asked right on cue. After that, I put the extra long lunge line on her and we repeated the walk-trot exercise. Moving to the right (her favorite) I asked for a lope with a kiss and she moved right into it. Then, I took a pause and repeated the series to the left (not so favorite). When I asked for a lope with a kiss, I was astounded! She easily moved right into it and maintained it. As I continued our session, the only time she began to get fussy was when she became tired. The poor thing has no endurance, but we are building it. I decided to push my luck; we walked over to the trailer near quarantine. She helped me open the back end, we made a short circle and walked up to the trailer. I tried sending her, but she looked at me as if to say, \\\"We always do this together.\\\" So, I took the first step in and she came with me. I was able to tie her in, close the slant etc. She backed out quite nicely. This was such an incredible session! |
03/23/2019 01:00 Group lunging in arena |
Group lesson: practicing lunge line in arena with other horses. Misty surprised me. We went in the middle of 5. She walked and trotted both directions, changed directions, and transitioned from one gait to another. BEAUTIFUL! I gave a \\\'kiss\\\' and she tossed her head in an attempt to drag me. Trainer agreed with plan to spend more time in the round etc. Yay, the conditions allowed for such practice. We returned to the group session and practiced at the walk trot again. She did well. We groomed and ended on a high. |
03/20/2019 03:30 Obstacle Course |
Conditions only permitted work on the obstacle course. We groomed, talked, walked, and visited the obstacle course. We practiced ground tying on the bridge, in the box, on the tarp, and in the open. We practiced 360 turns in the box and for fun on the bridge. She did a 360 to the right and a 180 to the left. We ran and jumped over a fairly high log and two lower ones. We jumped over the high log and whoa-ed on the landing. Since long trailer was there and open we stepped in and backed out. Success! It was a low-key magical session. |
03/18/2019 03:14 Lope on the lunge line in an arena |
Misty is great on the lunge line at a walk and trot at anytime anywhere. She has learned to lope in the round pen on and off line. We tried loping in the arena without the structure of the round pen, but it was an fail. She spent more time dragging me around. She will 1 circle to her right and fight going to her left. Next we decompressed and walked over to the trailer. After being given a moment, Success! She walked right in, was tied and slant used. She was praised and backed out beautifully! We finished the lesson with grooming and talking. |
03/15/2019 01:59 Round Pen, Trailer Loading, lunge in open space |
Bad conditions: Loaded in the trailer. She had a fit and refused, but we established who was boss. She went in the trailer without much ado. We hugged it out and engaged in much praise afterwards. Next, we groomed, then put a saddle on today. She did not care one bit. We went to the rock round pen and attempted some free lunging. Even though she did as asked, I backed off and chose to work in the center of the pen (ground tie, back, lateral bends, doing 360 turns). Finally, we went to a relatively dry spot on the ranch and attempted lunging in open space. She walks and trots well both directions. She did not want to lope. Once I got at least 3-4 strides upon request I stopped her there to end on a good note. |
03/14/2019 02:17 Trailer Loading, lunging in open space |
Conditions were bad. We practiced trailer loading since a trailer was parked in a relatively safe place for practicing. She was successful 2 times without the slants. After getting assistance, I learned how to navigate a loose slant, get her in and secure the slant. She did well. I found a relatively dry spot in the open for lunging. She will walk and trot easily, but when asked to lope she is resistant and prefers to drag me around. I managed one right circle and eventually, 3 strides to the left. We groomed, walked through a few available obstacles, and returned to paddock. |
03/13/2019 01:14 Wednesday Walk-n-Whoa |
Slick and muddy. We groomed, practiced trailer loading and walking in safe areas. Misty is getting less resistant to getting in the trailer. |
03/11/2019 01:11 Arena lunging |
Tried asking Misty to lunge in the arena without the structure of the round pen. She was able to walk and trot. She tried loping, but it was a bit too slick. She tried loping to the right and detests the left. |
03/08/2019 04:03 Round Pen |
Practiced walk, trot, lope in both directions and transitioning to each gait without voice. |
03/06/2019 03:30 Wednesday Walk-n-Whoa |
Walked the ranch and practiced our skills (ground tie, lateral bend, following voice commands (walk, click, whoa). We spent time grooming. |
03/04/2019 02:56 Trailer Loading, Obstacle Practice, Round Pen |
Misty was willing to load with minimal encouragement. She is becoming comfortable with the obstacles. We practiced stepping over a \\\'high\\\' log in the round pen in order to encourage her to lift her legs. |
03/02/2019 12:07 Trailer Loading, Obstacle Practice, Round Pen |
While learning trailer loading we took time to review everything else in between efforts. |
03/01/2019 04:00 Round Pen |
Brief round pen with a focus on loping with a kiss. Success! Barely have to show the stick. She did fantastic both directions. |
02/27/2019 04:00 Wednesday Walk-n-Whoa |
We practiced Wednesday Walk-n-whoa.She likes this and it gives us both a break. We practiced lateral bends, walking with a wild stick, backing, and of course, whoa-ing. The we spent time grooming and getting beautiful! |
02/26/2019 04:00 Obstacle Course |
Obstacle course practice. Misty does not care to work consecutive days. She gets a bit ornery. We practice jogging over logs and she thought crowding me was the way to go, but she was wrong. We practiced ground tying, 360 turns in the box, and walking on the tarp. She does well overall. |
02/25/2019 04:30 Round Pen |
The intention today was to keep the session short, but focused on cantering on the lunge line. WE warmed up with walk and jog, free lunged at the canter and then put the lunge line on. I worked on being calm and quiet while focusing on my own body position etc. My goal was one complete circle in each direction without much ado. Once she started, I became so mesmerized at her beauty, I forgot my goal as she made 2 plus circles in each direction. She was very attentive and eager to learn. |
02/24/2019 03:00 Round Pen |
Misty was able to work in the rock-round-pen around the muddy spots. We walked and trotted smaller circles on the lead line and due to the conditions of the pen we were only able to free lunge at the canter. She only gave a small kick the first time, but then settled right in and was able to work both directions on command. She also transitioned from walk to trot to walk etc. at random. I was quite pleased. She demonstrated her awesome ground tying skills and was happy to let me clean her feet while ground tying. |
02/20/2019 04:00 Wednesday Walk-n-Whoa |
Cold, frozen, muddy ground. It is also feeding day. Walked around the ranch practicing our skills at random. Focused more on transitioning from walk to trot to walk. Discovered a more fun way to execute lateral bends. |
02/18/2019 09:06 Round Pen |
Extremely cold day. We started off with grooming, went to the round pen, walked and trotted on the lunge line. Let her free lunge at the canter. She was crashing into the fence, I learned to anticipate where this would happen and would position my body accordingly. It helped. Next we tried a canter on the lunge line which requires a smaller circle. I eventually got one complete/quiet circle and was pleased. We did both directions. Used a different halter to work on lateral bends. Instead of work in baby steps towards the goal, I worked backward from the end goal. SUCCESS! |
